Cartoon dog and shadow figure on thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon tattoo of a wide-eyed pink dog with a black silhouette of a muscular figure with raised arms beside it. The bold black outlines and solid black fill are simple and flat, with white highlights and small areas of pink, red and blue. The design fills the upper thigh, and a person in red shorts and checked shoes is partly visible at the edges of the frame.

The dog had been yelping at the hayloft for the best part of an hour before I thought to look at the wall instead. Frost had come down hard on the yard and the bulb over the milking parlour door was the only thing burning, so everything it touched was yellow and everything it missed was black. Dorothy is a pink-coated mongrel with eyes like dinner plates and no spine for trouble, and she had planted herself behind my boots, growling at a shape that stretched right across the whitewashed barn wall.

It was a man, or the shape of one: broad shoulders, a head like a fist, both arms bent at the elbow so the biceps bulged out in lumps. It didn't move when I moved. I raised my torch, and the shape stayed put, arms flexed, looking very pleased with itself. Dorothy whimpered and sat on my foot. I said, "Right then, you great lump," and the thing on the wall said nothing, which I took as a bad sign.

Then I found the cause. Gordon, the lad we took on in October, had been doing press-ups on the hay bales every night after his shift since the first frost, and he'd left the lamp angled through the gap in the door. He stood in the doorway now with a sheepish face and a flask, his own shadow flexing back at me across the wall. "Sorry, Mr Pryce," he said. "Only I was trying to look like the picture on the feed sack."

Dorothy trotted over, sniffed his boots, and wagged her whole back end. Gordon crouched and rubbed her ears, and on the wall the shadow crouched too, arms still up and bulging, as if it had decided to stay on the job. I told him the wall would have to wait. We had forty ewes to bring down before the snow, and a dog who thought she had met a giant was no use to anyone.
