Stylised bird illustration

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A stylised bird faces right and looks upward, with a dark beak and a round eye. Its head and upper body carry bold blue and purple swirling linework, while the wing shows bands of yellow, orange, brown and green. The tail fans out into rows of red, teal and cream scalloped feather shapes, all set against a plain white background.

Marta had climbed the north tower three mornings running to see whether the blue bird had come back to the broken window ledge. Her uncle said the castle was full of birds that belonged to nobody, and it was the only thing he had ever told her about the place that she truly believed.

This bird was nothing like the sparrows squabbling over crumbs in the bailey. Its head swirled in violet and indigo, as if someone had combed the evening sky through its feathers, and its wing was banded like a harvest field: yellow, then ochre, then the brown of wet oak. When it settled, it fanned its tail into rows of red and teal scallops, each one a small door standing open.

On the third morning she carried up the tin of paints her grandmother had used on the chapel shutters, then sat on the cold step and waited. The bird tipped its head and looked up at the flat grey sky, as though something were written there that only it could read. She did not understand what it was reading until the sun broke through the clouds and the whole ruined hall flushed gold.

She painted nothing that day. She only pushed the rusted casement wider and kept still. When the bird left, it dropped a single cream feather onto the sill, scalloped at the edge like the rest. Marta tucked it into the paint tin beside the dried brushes and climbed down to tell her uncle that the birds had finally chosen someone to watch them.
