Stylised head with lightning bolt on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A single-line outline of a head with spiky hair and no visible facial features, set on the upper arm near the elbow. A red and blue lightning bolt runs diagonally across the face area, providing the only colour. The background shows a street, a railing and a paved pavement, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The bolt ran from his left temple down across his cheek. The lipstick gave out at the corner, so she finished it with a blue biro borrowed from the gas bill. 'You look like you've been struck,' she said. 'That's the idea,' Keith said, and he would not let her wash it off, even though the dance at the Working Men's Club started in an hour and it was raining hard enough to bounce.
At the club the lights were low and the DJ played nothing anyone knew. Keith stood by a pillar with his hands in the pockets of a jacket three sizes too big, and for a long while nobody looked at him. Then a man at the bar, who had once crewed on a trawler out of Hull, put down his pint and said the bolt was the finest thing he had seen all year. He wanted to know where Keith had found the nerve.
Jean never told him the nerve had come from a tube of lipstick she was not supposed to touch. She kept quiet and drank her lime and soda. Days later she found blue ink on her thumb, faint as a bruise, and she didn't scrub it off.
