Don't you look at me like that, our Kathleen. The buzzer had gone at Hollin Pit, the men were coming up grey to the eyebrows, and still Mrs Ridley kept her shop door shut with the blind down. Dad said she was saving the good stock for the Whitsun fair. Dad was wrong about most things, mind, but not about her jars.

Behind that counter she had a rainbow of them: rhubarb and custard, pink shrimps, sherbet lemons going soft in the heat, and one great glass sweet as big as a saucer, striped like the inside of a shell, that she called the lolly wheel. Every Friday she made candyfloss on a bent wire over the gas ring, and every Friday the cloud came out white and sparkling, and a lad would hold it up to the window like it was the moon. She tied gold foil stars to the ends of the paper bags so the bairns could tell which were theirs.

Then the cage stuck at four hundred feet, and nobody on the top knew how long it would take to free it. Mrs Ridley did not wait for the manager. She carried her whole stock up the hill in a barrow, jars and all, and sat on an upturned crate by the winding gear, handing sweets through the grille to every wife who came, until the men came up one by one with sugar on their fingers, laughing like fools.

When the last man was up, she counted the empty jars, wiped the lolly wheel on her apron, and said the men had earned everything nice, and the rest of it could wait for Whitsun.
