Watermelon, pineapple and banana tattoo designs
Fine line · Colour · Flash
The card displays three fruit designs on a white background within a kraft card frame labelled TATTOOS: a watermelon slice in pink with dark seeds and a green rind, a pineapple with pale blue-green leaves and yellow-orange skin, and a bunch of yellow bananas. The outlines are thin and drawn in dark ink, with soft flat fills and light shading on the fruit. The fruit is arranged loosely across the frame with the pineapple on the right and the other two on the left.

Dear Nell, the crossing from Cadiz was rough enough that the pineapples rolled off the slatted shelf twice before we'd reached the Bay, and I lost a whole crate of watermelons to the scullery floor. Cook says I'm to keep my chin up and my knife sharp, so I am doing both. Between the two I keep thinking about the little card you posted me before I signed on, the one with the transfers on it.

The paper was cheap, the kind of kraft that goes soft in a pocket, and you'd pressed the three fruits flat against the white inside as if you were laying out a pattern for a quilt. I kept it tucked behind the tin of nutmeg. Yesterday the second mate came down wanting something to put on his forearm for his sister's wedding, and I told him the bananas were the only thing I'd spare. He laughed so hard he nearly took the pantry door off its hinges.
The trouble is the galley has no sunshine. The porthole's been painted over since the storm, so I cut the fruit by lamplight and pretend it's noon in the market at Ponta Delgada. The pink of that watermelon is the nearest thing to a sunset I've seen since March. When we dock on Thursday I'll walk you down the gangway myself, and you can tell me which of the three you'd have me choose if I ever got bold enough to keep one.
Your loving brother, Tom. P.S. I've hidden the card in the flour bin. If the mate asks, tell him it's the only thing on this ship that doesn't spoil.
