Fruit temporary tattoo designs in a packet
Colour · Flash
The image shows a brown kraft card packet printed with the word TATTOOS and an arrow, with a clear window revealing three illustrated fruit designs on white. The designs are a watermelon slice in pink and green, a pineapple with green leaves and yellow skin, and a bunch of yellow bananas. The drawings use soft outlines with light watercolour-style shading and a flat white background.

Nell had until Friday to clear the trestle, and the only thing left on it was a card packet of fruit transfers that nobody had wanted since May.

Two pence each, she told the boy, who was counting coins into his palm with the grim care of a bank clerk. They're not real fruit, she said. Nothing's real on a wet Saturday.
He chose the pineapple first, the one with the crown of green leaves, and held it up to the sky as if checking it for ripeness. Then he licked his thumb, pressed the transfer down and rubbed the paper until the yellow scales came away in a wet, perfect print. The watermelon went on next, a pink wedge that bled a little at the rind, and the bananas last, all three curled together as if they'd been picked off the same stalk.
By four o'clock the rain had cleared and the pavement steamed. Nell found the boy by the bus shelter, arms out, showing his mother how the fruit had come off on the glass. She stood on the trestle and counted what was left: one packet, its clear window smudged where small hands had pressed. She folded it in half and slid it into her apron pocket, for next summer, and went home to put the kettle on.
