Sugar, spice and everything nice flash design

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A hand holds up a painted flash design on paper. It shows a rainbow arc behind two patterned hearts, a swirled lollipop, a fluffy cloud, three yellow stars, two blue flowers and small sparkles, with the words Sugar, spice and everything nice above and below. The black outlines are bold and the fills use bright rainbow colours with speckled textures.

Gran kept the sweet shop on Quay Street for forty-one years, and the rule was painted over the door in letters faded to the colour of weak tea: Sugar, spice and everything nice. I used to think it was a promise. By the time I took the keys off the hook, I knew it was more like a list of ingredients, and the gulls had read it too.

The storm came up the harbour on a Thursday, grey as a slate roof, and by teatime the rain was blowing sideways over the fish market. I stood in the doorway with a mop and watched the boats knock against the wall. Mr Okafor from the chandlery ran past with a coil of rope over his head, shouting that the tide was ahead of the forecast. I shouted back that the candyfloss in the back room was ruined anyway. He laughed, and then he was gone.

Then the wind dropped all at once, the way it does, and the light came through low and gold under the cloud. Out past the mole a rainbow stood up out of the water, one end in the harbour and the other on the roof of the Methodist chapel. Every boat had its nose turned toward it. I never learned who first wrote the rhyme about sugar and spice, but Gran would have said the sea doesn't care what you're made of.

I went back in and filled the jar with the swirled lollipops, the pink ones and the striped, and set one on the sill facing the water. Let the gulls read that. Everything nice, I thought, has to be paid for in weather.
