Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat character with a white face, yellow nose and brown spiky hair stands centrally in a pinstripe blue suit with a red tie and red shoes. It holds a small blue and white tool in one hand, with small sparkle marks beside it. Bold black outlines and flat fills of blue, red, brown and yellow sit on smooth skin with a soft, neutral background.

Dear Win,

You will not believe the new lodger in number four. He arrived on Tuesday in the rain with one suitcase and a pinstripe suit that had clearly been pressed by someone who loved it. He went straight to the hall clock, the one Father left us that has run four minutes slow since the war, and tapped it with a blue and white gadget no bigger than a fountain pen. It gave a little chirp like a wren, and sparks climbed off the brass as if someone had struck a match underwater.

He calls himself Mr Pim, though the register says otherwise, and he pays in coins from countries that no longer exist. Mrs Tully from the bakery swears she saw him on the pier at dawn, talking to the gulls as if they owed him money. Every evening he comes down to supper with his red tie straight and his red shoes polished, and he eats cold toast without complaint, which is more than I can say for the last three.

Last night the clock struck eleven at half past nine. I went out to the landing and found the front door open and the sea smell thick as soup. He stood on the step turning that little gadget over in his fingers, looking up at a sky where the stars had gone the wrong way round. "Tell the house I'll be back before the tea things are dry," he said, and then the clock struck nine, properly this time, and he was gone.

The kettle on the stove was still warm when I came down. Under the clock I found a card in careful capitals: LEAVE IT FOUR MINUTES SLOW, MRS HALE. I WANT TO BE EARLY FOR ONCE. Do write soon and tell me what you make of it.

Love, Dot
