Thin vertical tattoo on a hip at the beach
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A cropped photo of a woman standing on a sandy beach, with her face out of frame. A thin, dark vertical tattoo runs down the side of her hip towards the upper thigh, and its fine lines look solid black. The image is dominated by a white knit crop top, a grey thong with a white Calvin Klein waistband, and a blue sea behind her under a pale sky.

Tuesday, 14 June. The plumb line would not settle, so I have spent the morning on my stomach at the top of Scarth Cleave, tying a knot in the cord each time it swings past the stone I have marked. Mr Lusk says a line that will not hang true is either the wind's fault or the surveyor's, and he is too old to climb and too proud to say which.

The cliff is not on any chart my father left. He drew this coast from a rowing boat in 1891 and placed the headland a quarter mile east of where it stands. I have the cord, the brass bob, and a theodolite with one cracked lens. Gulls are nesting on the ledge where the old stones stand in a row, eleven of them, each leaning the same way as though pushed by one hand.
Today I measured the drop from the marker to the water: four hundred and six feet by my reckoning, and by the cord, which I trust more than arithmetic. Then the bob stopped dead a foot from the rock and would not move however I shook the line. Mr Lusk came up with his lantern, looked over the edge, and said only, 'Well. It's found the bottom, then.'
I have written the figure in the book in pencil, because ink would not be honest. Tomorrow I will lower a second line and see whether the sea agrees with it.
