The hall still smelled of floor polish and the same orange squash we drank at fourteen, and nobody had thought to take down the paper sunflowers stapled along the wall by the fire door. Gemma Tully found me before I'd got my coat off. She still had the laugh that used to get us both sent out of Mr Pryce's chemistry lesson.

We talked about the Year Nine project, the one where we planted seeds in yoghurt pots on the windowsill and had to measure them every Friday. Mine never rose above my knee. Gemma's went up past the blind, and by October it had a head the size of a dinner plate. She sang to it, she admitted, pulling a face, because the only song she knew all the way through was You Are My Sunshine, and she was sure plants liked a tune as much as anyone.

"I kept some of the seeds," she said, and opened her handbag. Inside was a small paper envelope, soft at the corners, labelled in biro with our two names and the date. "Thought one of us should try again." I laughed, then stopped laughing, because it was heavier than I expected, holding something so light.

Outside, the car park lights came on one by one. I tipped a seed into my palm, the colour of wet sand, and thought about that windowsill and how a sunflower always turns its face towards whatever light is left in the sky.
