Sunflower and script on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A shaded sunflower with a dark centre sits on the shoulder, with the words you are my sunshine in black script extending across the upper chest. The petals use soft grey and warm ochre shading with fine detail along their edges, while the lettering is crisp black linework. The photograph is taken outdoors at a slight angle, with the tattoo placed on the left of the frame against a blurred background of trees.

The letter came up from Tregarrow in a tin tobacco box, wrapped twice in oilcloth, and Nell read it standing at the back door with flour to her elbows. Her brother Samuel had never once put pen to paper in his life, so when she saw his square hand on the envelope she sat down on the step without thinking. He wrote that the herring had been poor all spring, that the Dolly Ann had lost a mast in March, and that he had planted sunflowers along the wall of the net loft because the girl at the chandlers swore they would keep the gulls off the drying nets. They had not. They had grown a yard higher than the loft roof and turned their faces to the harbour mouth every morning like they were counting boats.

He said the big one by the gate had taken a whole summer to open, and when it finally did, its middle was dark as a wet slate and the petals went gold at the tips. He had sat with it an afternoon and thought of her, and then he had felt foolish, and then he had not.
She read the last line twice before she understood it was not a joke at her expense. Beneath his name, in pencil pressed hard enough to dent the paper, he had copied out a song their mother used to sing over the washing, the words spelled the way she always spelled them, with a little curl at the end of each line.
Nell folded the letter along its creases, put it in her apron pocket, and went out to the yard where the hens were. She stood a long time by the wall looking at the sky over the sea, which was the same colour as the sky over Tregarrow, and for once she did not wish herself anywhere else.
