Sunflower with swirling vines
Botanical · Colour · Photo
A sunflower with yellow petals and a brown centre is the main subject, with green leaves and dark curling stems wrapping around it. The petals are shaded in yellow and orange with defined black outlines, and the leaves use layered greens. The design sits centred on a pale skin background with a dark vignette around the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The sunflowers along Cobb Lane had already bowed their heads by the time you reached the stile, and Tomasz from the mill was waiting on it with a sack he had no business carrying alone. Take it, he said, before the crows get the lot. You took it, because he was twelve and his mother had a bad hip. Beyond the stile the last hedge gave up and the forest began, a wall of oak and holly that the village had sworn two centuries ago never to cut past.

Nobody in Hale Morden went into those trees after the bell rang for dusk. Everyone knew the story of the sunflower at the heart of the wood, the one that had never once turned its face from the sun and so had never found its way home. Its stems were black as wet iron and curled like bracken, and whoever wandered in among them was never seen in the lane again. Your grandmother told it over the beans, and you did not believe a word, which is why you went in at the hour of the bell with a loaf under one arm and a handful of seed in your coat pocket.
The flower was there in a clearing where the light fell straight down like something poured. It was taller than your father had been, its petals hammered gold and rimmed with orange, its brown face packed tight with seed. The stems stirred when you stepped close and wound softly round your ankles, not tight, more the way a cat leans on a shin. You understood then what it wanted. It had only ever been able to see the sun. You knelt, pushed a seed into the soft earth at the clearing's edge, and the vines loosened, one curl at a time, and let you go.
You walked back with the loaf still under your arm. At the stile Tomasz asked whether the wood had eaten you. Not yet, you said. The next morning every sunflower along Cobb Lane had turned its head east, towards the trees, and the one you had planted showed two green leaves above the bracken.
