Daisy and blue flower bouquet

Botanical · Colour · Flash

A drawn bouquet of two large white daisies with yellow centres, surrounded by clusters of small blue five-petalled flowers, buds and green leaves. The linework uses fine stippling and hatching, with soft pink-grey shading on the daisy petals. Colour is limited to blue, yellow, white and muted greens, and the bouquet is arranged diagonally with trailing stems at the bottom on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Ward Nine ever asked for flowers at three in the morning, so when Mrs Adeyemi pressed the call bell and asked me to fetch her something from the shop, I assumed she wanted water. She wanted daisies. The shop was shut, the trolley man had gone home, and the only blooms I could find were the blue ones the florist downstairs kept in a bucket by the lifts, the little five-petalled things we call forget-me-nots on the wards though nobody ever checks. I took them anyway, along with two daisies from a vase at the nurses' station that somebody had forgotten to throw out.

I made the bunch on the desk under the lamp, turning the stems so the big white heads sat higher than the blue, the way my nan used to arrange them for the front room. The daisies had yellow middles like a fried egg someone had pressed with a thumb, and their petals went grey at the tips where the light didn't reach. Mrs Adeyemi watched me through the gap in the curtain. Her husband had died on the Sunday, in the bed by the window, and she had not once asked for anything since.

She took the bunch in both hands and said the blue ones were the wrong blue, too bright for a funeral. Then she laughed at herself and put her nose into the middle of a daisy, and the laugh came out wet and surprised, like something she had been holding under her tongue for days.

I stood there with the empty bucket until the morning bell went. Some things you carry up from the basement of the night without meaning to, and that was the one I kept.
