Mind the sawdust, it gets in your teeth, and sit where the canvas hasn't given up yet. The Great Vellani went grey two winters back, and the strongman who held the big top up was Dorran Hask, a name the crowds could roar. He could lift the ring master's upright piano on one arm while his boy sat on the other shoulder, swinging his heels and eating toffee from a paper twist.

By the spring the crowds were a handful of farmers and a dog. The gaffer came round with papers from a car park developer and said the lot would be sold by June. Dorran didn't argue. He just set his jaw, scowled at the empty benches, and told Pip to hold on tight. The boy gripped his collar with both fists and grinned, because he knew the face his father made before a lift, teeth bared, the whole tent holding its breath.

The lift was not for anyone who had paid. Dorran took the piano in both hands, veins standing out like rope, and held it until the boy's laughter rang off the canvas louder than the drum roll had ever been. Then he set it down gently, the way you put down something you intend to pick up again.

Pip climbed down, fetched the seven painted wooden balls from the trunk where he'd been hoarding them, each one stamped with stars, and rolled the orange one across the boards. "Count them," he said. Dorran did, and somewhere past six he started laughing too, and the old tent kept standing for one more night.
