Superhero cupcake flash sheet
Colour · Flash
The sheet shows sixteen cupcake designs arranged in a grid, each with swirled icing topped with a superhero reference such as a wolverine mask, a winged shield, a green fist, a horned helmet, a skull and a comic-style sound effect bubble. The linework is bold and outlined, with shading built up through soft gradients and highlights. Colour is applied throughout in bright reds, yellows, blues, greens and purples on a plain pale background.

Brother Anselm had been icing cupcakes for the Michaelmas fair since before the bells rang for Lauds, and by the third tray his hands had learned the shapes better than his head had. The mask he had done with a cocoa-dusted spoon looked like a badger in a bad mood. The winged shield came out lopsided. Brother Oswin, who had once been a signwriter in Leeds, said the star on the shield was the only thing that needed to be straight, so Anselm straightened it with the tip of a paring knife while flour dust turned gold in the window.

Nobody at St Brannoc's had asked for the cakes. A novice had, a boy of fourteen whose mother had posted a cardboard folder of drawings to the guesthouse with a note about the fête. The drawings were in pencil and felt tip, and one showed a green fist punching out of a swirl of lime icing. Anselm thought it a sin to waste such a fist on sugar. So he made all sixteen, in four rows, and carried them across the yard in a tin lined with greaseproof paper, the way he had carried the Christmas puddings for thirty years.
Here is the part he told only Oswin. At the fair, a girl in a yellow raincoat stopped at the stall and asked which one was the lightning bolt. Anselm pointed. She paid with a ten-pound note she had folded into a neat square. Then she said her grandfather had painted flames on lorries in Hull, and that the flame on the orange cake was the same flame his grandfather used to paint, and she held it up to the light as though it might still be warm.
Oswin said nothing for a long while. Then he took the last skull cupcake, the one with the blue sugar gem on its brow, and ate it in two bites, which Anselm considered the most honest review he had ever received.
