Superman logo under torn skin on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large Superman shield is tattooed on the side of the ribs, with the red and yellow emblem appearing through torn edges of skin. The jagged rips are rendered in blue, red and dark tones, giving a three-dimensional effect. The shield sits near the centre of the frame, with a grey top and a hand visible at the edges.

Dear Tom, the biscuit tin is still under the stairs at Calder Lodge, though the stairs are mostly gone now, and the council have finally put a fence round the castle. Before the skip men come, please fetch the comics. Mind the loose step by the arrow slit, and don't let the sheep get at the tin. There are eleven issues from 1961, all bought off a lad at Skipton fair for a penny each, and the covers still smell of his hair oil.

I read them on the curtain wall in the summers, with the wind off the moor turning the pages faster than I could follow. The shield on the front was the brightest thing I had ever seen. I traced the red and the yellow with a pencil stub until the paper went soft, and your grandad said I'd rub the hero clean off. Our Ronnie was the one who wanted to be him. He was forever climbing the broken portcullis and jumping from the gatehouse, arms out, shouting that he'd be fine.
The summer he was fourteen he came back from the keep with his shirt torn open at the side, red and blue ragged skin tearing away from the shield he'd drawn on himself in gentian violet from the chemist. He swore it was real. I told him it would wash off, and it didn't, not for a month. He wore that shield till he went to sea, and he never once flew.
When you're in the tin room, bring back the issue with the cover torn. That's the one I want by my bed. Tell the fence man the emblem is still there under the ivy, as red as a postbox, and that I'm keeping it safe. Love, Nan.
