Wonder Woman logo under torn skin

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A gold and black Wonder Woman emblem sits within a red, ripped-skin shape, as if revealed from beneath the surface. The linework is clean with smooth grey shading that gives the gold letterforms depth, and the torn edges have feathered shadows. The three photographs show the same arm from different angles, with a gloved hand and paper towel visible at the lower right of one frame.

The ewe had gone through the hedge headfirst, and by the time Nan Pryce and I hauled her out of the drift the light was already draining blue over the top field. My hands had stopped being hands. Nan just swore at the sheep in a low, steady voice, the way she swore at everything, including the weather and the man from the feed merchant.

Back in the byre she hung her old waxed coat on the nail by the door and went to fill the trough. The lining had torn at the shoulder, and when I reached to pin it I saw red satin underneath, and stitched into it a gold W with wings sweeping up from its top, edged in black thread so careful it looked printed. Somebody had worked hours on it, one stitch at a time, under a bulb that flickered.

"Mum did that," she said, without turning round. "Winter of the big snow. Dad was lost on the moor with the Lindqvist boys and she sat up with a needle every night until they came down the lane." She tipped the bucket. "Said she wanted something on the inside that didn't need explaining."

I asked what it meant. Nan shrugged, and the ewe bleated from the straw as if she had an opinion. "It means she was going out to get them," she said, and hung the coat back up with the gold facing the wall. "Whatever it took. Pass me that twine."
