A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to Carrow House the same week the lift broke, which my mum said was typical of the place: one good thing turns up and the other goes out. They nested in the gap above the walkway lights on the ninth floor, little mud cups stuck to the concrete like someone had flicked wet tea leaves at the wall.

Mr Adeyemi from flat 9C was the only one who looked up. He kept a folding chair on the walkway and a flask of something sweet, and every evening he counted the birds aloud as they dipped past the railings. 'Eleven,' he'd say, 'and that one with the red throat, that's the old one. She's been coming since before they painted the estate.' I told him swallows don't live that long. He said this one had to, because nobody had ever told her she could stop.

In August the council sent men with a cherry picker to knock the nests down before the mess reached the car park. I stood at the railing with my hands in my hoodie pocket and watched the whole row go into the skip. Mr Adeyemi didn't say anything. Then one swallow came round the corner of the block, dropped under the gantry, and settled on the bare patch where the nests had been, as if she'd left her keys there.

Next morning there was a fresh smear of mud already on the concrete, and a note under my door in Mr Adeyemi's careful capitals: BRING THE CHAIR, SHE WANTS TO SEE THE SKY FROM THE ROOF. We never saw that bird again. I still think about how she went back to the wrong place, sure it was hers.
