Swirling linework tattoo behind the ear
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a black tattoo of flowing, curling lines sitting behind the ear and extending down the side of the neck. The linework is smooth and slightly tapered, with the strokes overlapping to form a sweeping scroll that narrows toward the bottom. The image is in black ink only, shown against pale skin, and is cropped tightly to the ear and neck.

The wind off the salt flats has been wrong since the middle of the night, and Old Tamar says that means the sea is sulking. I have the brazier banked with wet myrtle and dry goat dung, the way my father taught me, so the smoke leaves the tower in a thick grey rope. Below us the road runs east toward Nora, and I am the only one awake to read it.

The smoke carries three messages for the garrison. One straight thread means herders are coming down the hills. Two threads mean strangers on the coast. A scroll that doubles back on itself, curling over its own tail, means the sea wolves have taken the salt ships. I feed the fire in short breaths and watch the wind tear my column into loops and ribbons. Those curls frighten me more than any straight line, because they say the men below cannot read them either.
At dawn a boy came up the goat track with his shirt torn and his palms raw, and said his mother had sent him to ask what the smoke meant. I told him it meant the wind was in a bad temper. He laughed, then saw my face, then stopped laughing.
I sent the scroll anyway, a long tapering line that drifted down the slope like hair over a shoulder, and I kept feeding it until the answer came back from the next tower: a single thread, standing straight and still in the calm air. The ships were safe. The boy ran home without waiting for me to tell him twice.
