Tacos heart and arrow on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A simple black outline of a heart with an arrow passing through it, with the word TACOS written in capital letters inside the heart. The linework is single-weight and slightly uneven, with no shading, and the ink is black on pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame on the ankle, with a light striped fabric visible around the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, the soup won't go cold before the story's done, and if your grandmother starts weeping at the goat again, let her, it's a good goat. Now. Cupid had a quiver in those days, a proper leather one with brass buckles, and he was an idle little sod who spent his afternoons perched on the wall of Halloway Cross market, watching the lunch queue and getting bored.

Across the square stood a van with a striped awning, and inside it stood a woman called Dolores Pike, who fried the best fish in three counties and could not, for the life of her, fall for anyone who didn't eat with both hands. Every lunchtime she leaned out of the hatch and shouted TACOS across the cobbles, and every lunchtime the boy on the wall watched her do it and thought it was the most ridiculous, wonderful noise he had ever heard.

So one Thursday he loosed an arrow. It sailed past the bread bins, ducked a pigeon, and struck the painted heart on the side of her van, the one she'd done herself with a tin of red gloss and a steady hand. The shaft stuck fast right through the middle of it. Dolores came out wiping her palms on her apron, saw the arrow, saw the word inside the heart, and said, very slowly, 'Well, I suppose I'd better feed him.'

That's forty-one years ago, and the arrow is still there, though the van has been repainted twice and the gloss has gone the colour of weak tea. So raise your glasses to the bride and groom, who have shouted nonsense across many squares between them, and to the boy on the wall, who has finally been paid back in fried fish.
