By the time I saw the mistake the paint was tacky and the coach was already idling outside the yard with its engine rattling. Mr Pascoe had sent me to letter the destination board for the Thursday run, but my brush had drifted. Where Redruth should have sat, I had written TAKE ME in plain capitals, and then, because the brush was loaded and my hand wanted a flourish, anywhere in a curling script, the tail running off the edge of the board like a fishing line.

A bus ought to know its own mind about direction, she said, even if its passengers don't.

An old man climbed on at the crossroads with a suitcase tied up in string. He squinted at the board for a long while before he sat down. "It means what it says, does it?" he asked me as I passed the fare box. "It means whatever you want it to mean," I told him, which was the only honest answer I had.

He rode to the end of the line and got off at Carnmarth crossing with the suitcase still tied, and I kept the board. It hangs above my bench now, where the light comes through the dusty window, and some mornings I read it before I do anything else.
