Dear Tom, I'm writing this on the back of a spare ticket roll because the caravan table wobbles and no amount of folded beer mats will fix it. You remember what Dad painted above the candyfloss hatch the summer before he died? Go where you feel the most alive. Everyone on the fair thinks it's about the rides, and I let them. But I'll admit I went up the big wheel on our last night in Ludlow, when the engineer forgot to lock the gondola, and I stayed up there while the dismantling crew shouted at me from below. The whole valley was grey and the river had a skin of mist on it. I felt something I can't name. It wasn't fear, though my hands were shaking on the bar.

So I've decided I'm not sending this from Hereford. I'm walking to the bus stop in the morning, catching the Shrewsbury coach and getting off at the bottom of our lane. You can meet me with the dog and tell me whether the hedges are still as loud in May as I remember. If they are, I'll stay until the fair comes round again. If they aren't, we'll find something else worth climbing up for. Love, Nell.
