Traditional style colour tattoo of a blue police box with a red ribbon and red flowers and green leaves, on a woman's upper arm.

TARDIS and flowers on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A blue police box with yellow windows and a Police Box sign sits at the centre of the design, framed by a red ribbon behind it. Two red flowers with yellow centres and green leaves form a base beneath it. Bold dark outlines and flat, solid fills in blue, red, yellow and green give a traditional look, and the design is set against pale skin and a white lace top.

Dear Tom,

You'll laugh, but the police box is back on platform two. Mr Pollard from the signal box swears it wasn't there at six, and it was sitting there at seven with its lamp lit, bold as brass, as if it had been waiting since the war. I went out with my flask and my secateurs, meaning to cut the roses back, and found a red ribbon tied round the railing at the end of the bench, neat as a bow on a parcel. Nobody on the staff will own to it.

I'm writing because you asked me last Christmas whether the old station ever had a proper story, and I told you no. I was wrong. My mother told me the box came in with a wet autumn the year the line shut for the second time, and it stood on the platform for a fortnight painted the colour of a bruise. People said it was a constable's post, but there was never a constable. Then one morning it was gone, and in its place were two red flowers with yellow middles, planted in a neat row with their leaves turned up like open hands.

The ribbon's in the top drawer with my good scissors. I've planted two more flowers this morning by the bench, the same as the ones in your drawing. If you come up at Easter, bring your own trowel and don't knock on the box. It doesn't like to be knocked on, and it never answers the door to anyone who asks politely.

Love, Nan
