TARDIS with banner lettering on a leg
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A blue TARDIS police box sits at the centre of the design, with its door panels and POLICE BOX sign picked out in black linework. Pink and purple banners wrap around it and carry lettering in black script, and the bold black outlines are typical of a traditional style. The blue and pink colours dominate against the skin, and the design fills the frame from top to bottom.

The box came down on the salt flats on the third day of thaw, and Mabry Quill was the first in Brack Hollow to walk out to it with a pail of goat's milk balanced on her hip. It was painted the colour of a winter dusk, and a lamp on its roof hummed like a struck bell. A man stood in its doorway with his coat buttoned wrong. He looked at the milk, then at her, and asked whether the river had dried up yet, as if he had only been gone a week.

He gave his name as Ostrel Vane, which Mabry said was no name at all, and he said that was rather the point. He had taken the box from people who kept it locked in a silver hall and never once looked out of its windows. "I wanted to see everything," he said, "so I took it and ran." The box, he told her, would carry you anywhere a person could imagine, provided you kept the door shut behind you and never sat down on the floor.
Mabry went with him that same evening, though she told no one but the goats. She saw a sky with three moons and a sea that sang in a key she almost remembered. She saw the Hollow again as a city of glass towers, and her mother's grave under a bronze tree. When they came back to the flats the box was waiting, and the milk in her pail was still warm, though she had been gone a year.
Ostrel had left a note tucked under the door in square, careful writing: Walk out, then walk back in, and mind the step. Mabry keeps the pail on her windowsill now. Some mornings she hears a bell hum far off over the flats, and she carries the milk down to the step anyway, though the goats are long gone and the river has never run again.
