TARDIS police box on upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo depicts a blue police box with a dark roof lamp and small paned windows, shown at a three-quarter angle. The shading is smooth and realistic, with dark outlines and highlights that give the box a solid, three-dimensional form. The blue colour dominates against the skin, and the box sits centrally on the upper back against a blurred outdoor background.

Nell Pritchard had been promised that the Pavilion ballroom would hold four hundred dancers on a Saturday, and in three years she had never seen it hold more than a hundred and a bass drum. Tonight the band was tuning beneath the gold balcony when the blue box appeared between the cloakroom and the piano, as though the carpet had simply shuffled over to make room for it.

Its lamp glowed the colour of weak tea. The door opened and a man in a moth-eaten cardigan stepped out, squinted at her sequins, and asked which year it was. She told him 1962. He looked pleased, then faintly sorry, as if he had hoped for another answer. "I'm meant to be meeting someone," he said, checking a wristwatch that ran backwards. "Her name's Maud. She's late, which means she's still alive somewhere."
The band slid into a slow foxtrot. Nell could not have said why she offered him her hand, only that he danced like someone who had learnt from a book with missing pages, all enthusiasm and no sense of where his feet belonged. He trod on her toes twice and apologised each time as though the floor had been unfair. Over his shoulder she watched the box's lamp blink in time with the brass.
When the last chord faded, the man was gone, and so was the box. The cloakroom attendant, a woman with reading glasses on a chain, handed Nell a coat she had never left there. In its pocket was a key with a small blue handle and a note in looping pencil: Tell him I'm sorry I was late. Save me the next waltz. M.
