Nobody in Hebden Bridge believed Mrs Okonedo when she said the phone box outside the Co-op had been painted over twice in one night, so I stopped arguing and started mixing paint. I'm a signwriter by trade, which means I spend my days lettering shop fronts in gold leaf and my evenings being told I'm wasting my talent. Mrs Okonedo paid in cash and in jam.

The job was a box on the corner of Crown Street, cast iron and blue once, now the colour of weak tea. She wanted it back the way it was before the council sold it for a pound. I stripped it, primed it, and got as far as the lettering along the side before the wind changed and the box began to hum. Not loud. Like a fridge that has opinions.

I fetched a sponge, a jar of cadmium red and a bottle of violet, and I dabbed a wash of colour across the door, the way my dad used to when he painted skies in watercolour. Magenta bled into the blue. Where it spattered, the paint seemed to go somewhere else. When I stepped back the box had grown taller and the door stood open a crack, showing a corridor full of light and a smell of wet pennies.

Mrs Okonedo was waiting inside with a tin of biscuits and a clipboard. "You've left the window panes bare," she said. "You always forget the window panes." I hadn't. I had painted them white and clean, and now I could see a little sky through them, and it was the wrong sky, the one with two moons.
