Tattooed forearm with a grey cat on a car dashboard
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A grey cat with its eyes shut lies across a car dashboard and gently bites the finger of a hand reaching in from the lower right. The forearm and back of the hand carry dark tattoo work, with a larger design on the forearm and a smaller mark on the hand. The view through the windscreen shows a motorway with traffic and trees under an overcast sky, and the composition is informal with the cat and hand filling the centre of the frame.

Brisket had claimed the dashboard somewhere past Junction 9 and would not be shifted for love nor money. Nell drove the M4 one-handed, her other hand resting loosely at the top of the wheel, because the grey cat had decided her fingers were a sort of biscuit. Every few miles his head drifted over and he took a delicate nibble, eyes screwed shut in bliss, as if she were the one doing him a favour.

Owen had handed him over the week their mother died, saying a cat ought to have a window seat on a long drive. The van had been Owen's too, and so had the job: a load of reclaimed oak from Bristol to a boatbuilder in Deal who paid in cash and cheddar. Brisket sat with his paws tucked under his chest, watching the lorries in the outside lane as though they were his responsibility.
Near Maidstone the traffic stalled behind a horsebox. A cyclist in hi-vis overtook them on the hard shoulder, and Brisket rose, ears flat, to follow him with the solemn interest of a magistrate. Nell laughed so hard she nearly missed the slip road. "You'd have made a better navigator than Owen," she told him. He yawned, showing every tooth, and closed his eyes again.
At Dover she parked by the harbour wall, wound the window down and lifted him onto the sill. Gulls squabbled over a chip paper. Brisket stretched, looked back at the road as if it owed him money, and jumped down into the seat. She rested her forehead on the wheel and realised she had not cried once the whole way, which was probably what Owen would have wanted, and also the most Owen thing she had ever done.
