Tattooed sphynx cat with black and grey roses

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A hairless sphynx cat sits in front of a brick wall, with its head turned slightly to one side and its large ears upright. Black and grey tattoos cover its neck and upper chest, including what appear to be roses and shaded foliage. The shading is soft and greyscale, and the photograph is sharp with even natural light.

Dear Maud,

The wall roses came into bloom the week after you left, all at once, as if they had been waiting for you to go. Father's old brick wall at the back of Hollins Cottage is hung with them now, a crimson so dark it reads as grey in the morning light, shaded at the edges by foliage the colour of wet slate. I stood on the bench with the secateurs and could not bring myself to cut a single one.

You will laugh, but I have been reading the nursery ledger again. Your grandfather wrote down every rose he planted against that wall, forty-one of them, with a little ink sketch beside each name. Beside the last entry, dated the spring he died, there is no name at all, only a drawing of a bud with its petals shaded in pencil so heavily the paper has torn. I had always taken it for a mistake. This morning I found a seedling underneath it, a foot tall, with leaves like shadows.

I have decided to leave it where it is. The man at the Parish nursery is sure it will not flower before autumn, and I am sure it will flower by Thursday, so between us we have agreed that I should tell you about it and let you come and see for yourself. Bring the good trowel. Bring the ledger too, the one with the grey ribbon.

Love, Edie
