Neo-traditional tattoo of a teacup with a pink rose and green leaves on the upper arm, with the words Tea heals all wounds curving around the saucer.

Teacup and rose with tea quote

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A teacup with a patterned rim sits on a saucer, with a pink rose and dark green leaves in front and dotted linework rising as steam above the cup. The outlines are bold and the fills are mostly flat with some soft shading on the cup and petals. The phrase TEA HEALS ALL WOUNDS follows the curve of the saucer across three photographs of the same arm.

You learn the kitchen at the top of Hollin Row by its kettle, which is older than the terraces and never quite stops ticking as it cools. Your mother keeps it on the hob from five in the morning, when the cage comes up from the pit and the men come in grey to the eyebrows, and she makes the tea strong enough to stand a spoon in. Nobody sits down until the cups are poured. That is the rule, and it is the only one she has ever said out loud.

The cups are the good ones, bone china with a scrolled band round the rim, a wedding present that has survived two strikes and a flood. On the morning after the Gilchrist roof came in, she sets one down in front of Dan Pryce and he does not lift it. He just looks at the steam going up in a thin grey thread, the way it used to in the chapel on a cold Sunday, and then he looks at the rose painted on the side, pink as a lip, which she bought off a market stall in Barnsley before you were born.

You think she is going to say something wise. Instead she pulls the chair out with her foot and says, drink it while it's hot, love, and you watch him do it, one swallow, then another, until the cup is empty and the rim has left a faint line on his mouth. Outside the lamps are still burning on the pit head. Inside, the kettle ticks down, and for once nobody gets up to shut the door.
