Cat in a teacup on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a cat sitting inside a teacup, with the cat's tail curling over the rim and a saucer drawn beneath. The linework is thin and uniform in dark ink, with no shading or fill. The hand is raised against a blue plaid blanket and a knitted grey sleeve, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the inner wrist.

Mind the stairs, because the lift in Coronet House has never once in my life gone all the way up, and you'll be wanting your breath for the telling. Sit down there by the radiator. Now. The cat I'm talking about was called Biscuit, and she belonged to nobody, which in a block like that is the only sort of cat worth having.

Every morning she went down nine flights to Mr Okonedo's landing, where he put out a saucer of milk, and every morning she climbed back up with her tail held high like a flag. One winter the boiler gave out across the whole block and the pipes sang all night. Mrs Pryce on the eleventh floor came up in her dressing gown with a blue teacup she'd had from her mother, set it on the sill, and said, there, if you're cold, you may as well be cold in style.

Biscuit looked at that cup the way a magistrate looks at a man in the dock. Then she stepped in, turned round twice, and settled with her tail curled over the rim so it hung down the outside like a bell rope. Nobody believed a cup could hold a cat. It did. It held her until the spring, and the saucer caught every drip the ceiling let fall.

When the heat came back, Mrs Pryce tried to take the cup away, and Biscuit gave her such a look that the cup stayed where it was. Some mornings you can still see the rim with a grey hair caught on it, and the saucer full of rain, and the cat sitting in the middle of it all as if she had been poured there herself.
