A large dotwork mandala tattoo with black outlines and soft shading on the outer thigh, with a white brick wall behind.

Dotwork mandala on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large circular mandala with layered petal and star-shaped rings is tattooed on the outer thigh. The black outlines are crisp, and the fill is built from stippled dots that create grey shading, fading lighter toward the centre. A few petals have faint mauve or pink tints at their edges, and the design is centred in the frame against a pale brick wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit in, closer, the wind off the marsh wants a story as much as you do. When I was your age, Halloran's Travelling Marvels ran thirty-one wagons, a brass band that could never agree on a key, and a big top with a pattern stitched into its crown. Eight rings of canvas petals spread out from the centre pole, each one pointed like a star, and all of it was sewn by a woman called Ada Vell who never let anybody watch her work.

By the year the canvas went grey, there were nine wagons left. The elephant had gone to a butcher in Lincoln and the strongman had taken a job selling insurance door to door. Still they raised the tent every Saturday on the same patch of common, because Halloran said a circus that stopped moving would simply rot where it stood. Ada kept mending. Rain had punched holes through the outer petals, so she sat under the pole with a bone awl and a tin of soot, pricking the cloth dot by dot until the holes filled with shadow and the whole pattern looked as though it had been breathed on.

On the last night, the lamps failed one by one. In the dark, the light through the mended cloth fell onto the sawdust in a ring of soft grey stars, and the band, who had come back from every corner of the county for the final show, stood in the middle of it without a single note between them. Tom Kettering, who sold lemonade and was not yet ten years old, counted the shapes on the floor and got thirty-two, the same as the canvas.

When he looked up, Ada was already folding her awl away, as though the whole of Halloran's had only ever been a pattern waiting for the lamps to go out.
