Teapot and red roses design
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A vintage silver teapot with an ornate handle and lid sits above two dark red roses with green leaves. Dashed lines radiate outwards behind the subject, and the teapot is shaded in greys with highlights. The warm golden, mottled background frames the centred composition.

The snow shut the Dunnock road the week after Martinmas, and for three days nobody came up the lane but the wind. Abel Teague kept a silver teapot on the dresser, his mother's, with a lid that rose like a church spire and a handle curled like a fern. He never used it. He said the good pot was for the day someone came to call.

On the fourth morning there was a knock, but no one was on the step. Two dark red roses lay on the flagstones, still wet, as if they had been carried through the frost and set down with care. Their stems had been stripped of thorns. Mary, his daughter, brought them in and set them in the teapot, though the pot had never held water, and by noon the kitchen smelled of June.
Abel went out to the gate to look for the caller. The snow was unmarked except for a line of small dashes running out from the yard in every direction, like the rays a child draws around the sun. They stopped at the fence. Nobody had walked them. Something had simply crossed the field and left no feet behind.
He came back in and filled the pot with tea for the first time in thirty years. Mary poured for him, and the roses sat between them on the cloth, not one petal fallen, while the snow kept on, and neither of them asked who had called.
