Teapot and teacup on a finger
Hand · Colour · Photo
Two small tattoos sit on the middle finger of a hand against a pink background: a blue teapot with a pink lid and base, and a smaller pink teacup with a teal outline below it. The linework is bold and dark, with simple cartoon-like shading and highlights on the teapot. The composition is close and centred on the finger, with the two motifs stacked vertically.

The kettle on Mrs Pargeter's stove had been sulking since Tuesday, and so, Nell suspected, had the teapot, because it refused to pour anything but a thin brown dribble no matter how she tipped it. She carried it out to the bottom of the garden anyway, where the runner beans had climbed the fence and the blackbird was already complaining about the cat. Her grandmother had always said a pot that wouldn't pour was only lonely, and that you should sit with it for a while before you gave up on it.

So Nell sat on the upturned crate by the shed with the pot in her lap and the little pink cup balanced on her knee. Along the path, the sunflowers were nodding at each other as if they had heard something rude. She tipped the teapot again. A bead of blue-grey liquid crept out of the spout, hesitated, and then ran down the side like it had been waiting all week for permission.
She laughed, and the blackbird stopped scolding. Nell poured the cup full, though it was only half a cup of something that tasted of rain and old enamel, and she drank it anyway, watching the beans shiver in the wind. When she went back inside, she left the teapot out on the windowsill to dry, with the cup turned upside down beside it, and the next morning she found the pair of them full of sunshine and nothing else, which she decided was almost the same thing.
