Dear Marjorie, the blue teapot has gone missing again, and I have looked under every bench and behind the potting shed. Your mother's china always did have a mind of its own. Last Tuesday the cups were found lined up along the bottom step as if waiting for the rain to finish, and the saucer had walked off with the spoon.

I should tell you what Mr Okafor said when I asked him at the allotment gate. He leaned on his fork and said the pot had been seen crossing the lane at dusk, carrying the pink cup under its spout like a handbag. Nobody believes him, but nobody laughs either, because the runner beans have been climbing the trellis in a neat spiral since Easter, and nobody here has planted that.

Anyway, I have put out a saucer of milk and a biscuit tin with the lid off, and I have left the kitchen window open a crack. If the pot comes home, it will want its tea made properly, with the leaves warmed first and the water just off the boil. I shall make it the way your grandfather liked, strong enough to stand a spoon in.

Do come up at the weekend. Bring the little tin of sugar cubes you were so fond of, and we'll sit on the bench and wait together. I expect the cup will turn up by then, sulking, somewhere among the sweet peas.
