Bow and glasses tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo on the side of a finger shows a red bow above a pair of round-framed glasses with dot details, both drawn in simple cartoon style. The linework is thin and clean, with flat red fill on the bow and dark grey outlines on the glasses. The tattoo sits centrally against a blue denim background, with the hand filling most of the frame.

The bow had slipped again, and Mabel Pim could not be expected to perform with her ears full of wind. She sat on an upturned crate behind the big top, spectacles pushed low on her nose, a mouthful of pins and a costume of faded sequins across her knees. Through the canvas came the ringmaster's cough, rattling like a loose wheel, and the slap of rain on a tent that had more patches than sky.

Nobody bought tickets for the Grand Royal any more. The lion had gone to a farm in Norfolk, the clowns had taken jobs at a garden centre, and the strongman sold insurance from the back of a van. What remained was Mabel, her needle, and a ledger of unpaid bills that she read every night through her round glasses, squinting at the sums as though they might add up if she waited long enough. Mr Gorse, the ringmaster, called it foolish to keep sewing for an empty ring.

On the last Saturday of October, a girl in muddy wellingtons wandered in under the flap, clutching a sixpence and staring at the bow. "Why's your ribbon so big?" she asked. Mabel took the pins from her mouth. "So people at the back can find me," she said, and the girl laughed, which was the first sound the tent had made in a month that was not a cough.

The girl stayed. Then her brother came, then two mothers, then a goat wearing a paper crown. Mabel tied the red bow tight, climbed onto the sawdust and bowed so low her glasses slid right off. Nobody could see her face. Everybody could see the bow.
