Teacup and rose on a finger

Hand · Colour · Photo

A small teacup with a pale green and white design sits on a saucer, with a pink rose and green leaves painted inside the cup. The outlines are thin and dark, and the colour is soft and flat with little shading. The tattoo is centred on the side of a finger, and a black-gloved hand holds the finger against a plain background.

Don't you go telling Maureen I said so, but the tea was never the point at Hollis Cottage. It was the cup. Old Mrs Fenwick had a set of six, bone china with a green rim painted like ivy, and every one of them had a rose curled up in the bottom where you couldn't see it until the tea was nearly gone. She'd pour and say nothing, and you'd drink down to the petal and there it was, pink as a fingernail.

My sister Edie wanted the cup with the chip on the handle. Edie always wanted the one that was broken. So Mrs Fenwick said, fine, Edie, you can have it, but you'll sit where I tell you and you'll sit till the kettle's cold. And she did. Three hours in that wicker chair in the back garden with the bees going on about the lavender, and not a word out of her, which for Edie was a miracle of the Lord.

When she finally got up the saucer was still in her lap, and on the rim she'd written a name in pencil, the name of the boy who'd been courting her since Whitsun. Mrs Fenwick took one look, nodded, and poured her another cup. That's how you know a thing's settled round here. Nobody argues with a rose at the bottom of a cup.

Edie married him in the September. She still has the cup. The chip's on the wrong side now, from all the washing up, but she swears it's the best cup in the house, and she drinks from it every morning with her little finger lifted, just like the old woman taught her.
