Telephone and flowers on a lower leg
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black vintage wall telephone sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by red five-petalled flowers with green leaves and stems. The words THE JERK STORE CALLED are set in block capitals beneath the telephone, with bold black outlines and flat solid fills. The tattoo is photographed close up on the lower leg above the ankle, with blue and orange trainers and a mottled stone surface in the background.

Dear Lorraine, The telephone bolted to the wall of the Gas N Go at Pendle Wells has rung more often this week than the one in our own hallway has in ten years, which I'm choosing to take as a sign. I've been stood beside it since Tuesday with a bag of pork scratchings and a car that has given up on the 62 for good. Gary swears the tow truck from Lone Tree is twenty minutes out. Gary has said twenty minutes four times now.

Yesterday it actually rang. Shaz behind the counter lifted the receiver, listened with her eyebrows climbing, and held it out to me without a word. It was a man called Dennis from the hire firm, who had been trying to reach me since Sunday about the deposit. He said, very seriously, that he had some news and it was bad, then went quiet for so long I thought the line had died. At last he said, "The jerk store called, Ray. They want their customer back."
I laughed so hard Shaz had to thump me on the back. Dennis didn't laugh. He asked me to confirm my address, and I told him it was wherever the sun goes down on this road. He said that was not a valid address and hung up.
The tow truck finally pulled in this morning, and the driver had Dennis's voice, which I didn't think was possible. I'll post this from the next town with a phone that works. Keep the porch light on. Love, Ray.
