Telephone and flowers on a lower leg

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey telephone with a curled cord sits at the centre of the design, framed by red five-petal flowers with dark green leaves. Bold black outlines and solid fills give it a classic flash look, and the black lettering reads THE JERK STORE CALLED across two lines beneath the motif. The photo is taken close up at an angle, with the design on the shin above a sneaker.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Edna Marsh had eleven years on the plugs at Halesworth exchange and had heard every excuse going, so when Mr Pilling rang at ten past four to say his black telephone had been ringing all afternoon with nobody on the line, she told him the only sensible thing: that a telephone is not a clock and does not keep hours.

He rang back at half past. Then at five. By the sixth call she had started listening, and on the seventh she heard it herself, a faint chime coming down the wire from somewhere past the hedgerows, then a man's laugh, then a voice reading out a catalogue of novelties in the tone of someone who had never once been refused. "Nine shillings for the exploding rose," it said. "Ask for the jerk store called." Edna cut the line and wrote the number on her blotter.

Next morning Mr Hibbert, the supervisor, had a letter from the Post Office about a seaside shop sending out bills for calls nobody had made. Edna pulled the old ledger, found the number, and rang it herself. A cheerful woman answered, said the shop had shut in 1939 and the roses had gone with it, and asked whether Mr Pilling still wanted his.

Edna set the receiver down very gently. Out in the lane the red flowers on the hedge had come out overnight, all of them at once, and she could not remember ever planting them. She did not tell Mr Pilling. She let the bell ring on in his hallway and kept her hands off the plug.
