The END lettering on an upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells out the words The END, with The in a flowing script set above END in uppercase block letters. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink with no visible shading. The close crop centres the lettering on pale skin, with a dark wooden surface blurred at the edges.

You carry the lettering chisel up through the beech wood because Mr Harrow's knees will no longer take the stile, and because the parish has decided the last of the Pell headstones must be cut before the frost. The path is the colour of wet slate. Past the third oak a jay starts shouting, and you stop to listen, the way your grandmother taught you, until the shouting stops.

At the clearing the stone lies face down in bracken. Harrow's order is written on the back of a seed packet: The END, with the word The in a looping hand above the block capitals, the way the old masons did it when a family wanted its name carved last on everything. You scrub grit out of the old grooves with a wire brush and find an earlier inscription underneath, a half-buried line with its final word worn away, as if whoever cut it had been called in to supper.
You work until the light goes thin and gold. The chisel rings true on every stroke. The E curls where your hand wants it to, and the D bellies out like a bowl. When you blow the dust away, the letters look cleaner than anything you have ever cut, and you feel the strange lightness of finishing a sentence that was never yours to start.
Walking back, you pass the village sign and the lit windows of the Crown. Harrow asks if it's done. You tell him yes. He reads the stone in his head, nods, and says the family will be pleased, though nobody from the family has come to look. Behind you the wood closes over the path, and the jay, at last, falls quiet.
