Realistic wound tattoo on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A close-up of skin showing a tattoo of two curved, torn-looking wounds surrounded by red veining and bruised shading. The edges use dark black and brown shading with raised, textured detail, and the surrounding red marks blend into the skin. The composition is tightly framed on the central design with the skin's natural texture visible around it.

The badger had been at the tulips again, so I went out at dusk with a torch and a bad temper, and found him sitting on the compost heap as if he owned the plot. My father kept those beds for forty years and taught me that the soil remembers every hand that has worked it. I told the badger as much. He looked at me the way the magistrate in Ludlow once looked at my uncle.

Three nights later I found the bulbs dug up in a neat line along the fence, and a fresh bite in the net bag I'd left by the water butt. The mesh had torn in two curves, each as wide as my thumb, and the threads had split the way string does when something means it. I should have been angry. Instead I sat on the upturned bucket and laughed until Mrs Okafor leaned over her wall to ask whether I'd finally been hit by a stray cricket ball.
My father used to say you don't fight an animal that's only hungry, you feed it somewhere else. So I bought a bag of peanuts and a plastic trough and set them by the hedge at the bottom of the plot, where the nettles grow tallest. For a week nothing happened. Then one Monday the trough was empty, the peanuts were gone, and a line of small prints ran across the damp path to the bulb bed, stopping just short of the first green shoot.
The tulips came up in April, every one of them, striped red and yellow like a row of boiled sweets. I never saw the badger again, but on the mud beside the trough there was always a scatter of fresh peanut shells, and once a scrap of the old net, chewed flat and folded neatly, as if it had been left behind as a receipt.
