Think outside the box lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo spells out the phrase THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX in blocky capital letters, with a dashed outline square around the words and a grey shaded panel behind part of the text. The lines are clean and dark, and the grey fill is soft and even. The photograph is a close crop of a hairy forearm with the tattoo centred against a dark background.

The crates were stacked on the Hythe Lass as tight as a Sunday loaf, six high from bow to stern, and by the time the lock keeper at Iffley waved you through, you had already decided the stack was wrong. Your uncle Dennis had built it that way for thirty years. Nobody had ever asked why the top row sat a foot back from the edge.

Dennis said the Thames had no interest in cleverness. Each evening he sat on the tiller box with his flask and a bar of chocolate and told you the box was the box, and a barge that wandered off its line ended up in the reeds with the swans laughing at it. You listened, because he was your uncle and the barge would one day be yours, and because the river was brown and wide and went exactly where it always went.

Somewhere past Abingdon you took a hacksaw to the lashing rope on the port side, not to wreck anything, but to see what the cargo wanted. The crates shifted, the top row slid sideways into the gap where the old paint pots had rolled, and the whole deck tilted in a way that made Dennis swear, then go quiet. The stack that had stood square for three decades now leaned out over the water, a shape nobody had planned.

At Culham lock the keeper looked up at the crooked load, scratched his chin, and said it was the first interesting thing he'd seen on the cut all year. Dennis laughed until he coughed. You rebuilt nothing. You tied the rope in a new knot and steered on, and the river, for once, had to find its own way round you.
