Three birds on a wire on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Three small songbirds sit side by side on a single thin horizontal line, which runs across the inner forearm. The birds are drawn with fine outlines and soft shading in dark blue and black, with lighter highlights on their bodies. The plain skin around the design leaves the tattoo as the clear focal point of the photo.

Now sit down by the radiator, pet, and I'll tell you about the wire. Nobody strung it up for birds. The council ran it from Ashworth House to the lamp post on Carrow Road so the men with the cherry picker could reach the lights, and for six summers it was nothing but a grey line nobody looked at twice.

Then three small birds landed on it the week Bernadette Hale's husband went back to sea. Three of them, dark as ink against the evening sky, and they sat with their backs to the wind as if someone had booked them in. The first was a sharp little thing who never stopped talking. The second was quiet and kept its head down. The third kept flying off and coming back with bits of string in its beak, and nobody on the fourteenth floor could say where it found them.

The wire dipped whenever they sat close, and on blustery nights you could watch it swing, and the three of them would shuffle along until it hung level again. Bernadette used to say they were working out the weight between them. Her husband's letters came less often, so she stopped counting the days and started counting the birds instead, every morning from the balcony with her tea going cold.

When the council took the wire down for the new cladding, the birds went straight to the scaffold pole and sat there in a row, which is not what a sensible bird does. Bernadette, who had nothing much left to keep her company but the weather, found she was glad of it. The wire came back in the spring, and do you know who tested it first? Right, now mind the stairs on your way out.
