Mind the flour sacks by the door and keep your voice low, the oven's still ticking and the bread isn't awake yet. Sit there where the warmth comes up through the boards. This is the tale of the three Dunmore children, who inherited a bakery on Cobb Lane with a debt larger than the flour stacks and a sign that had lost half its letters. The middle boy, Teddy, wore a mustard jumper and could not lie to save his life, so when the bank man came with his clipboard he stood in the doorway with his hands in his pockets and said nothing at all. The youngest, Hester, wore thick round glasses and kept the accounts in a biscuit tin under the proving drawer. She counted every coin twice and still found the sums short.
One February morning, before the first van rattled past, Hester found a letter from a supplier in Leeds offering to clear the debt if they would sell the recipe for the plum loaf. Marjorie read it, rolled her eyes, and then, very slowly, grinned. They went out into the frosty yard and dug up the tin box Nan had buried under the rhubarb. Inside was no deed and no money, only the plum loaf recipe in Nan's careful hand, with one line underneath: Sell this to nobody. Feed the street.
So they baked. They gave the loaves away to anyone who knocked, and by the time the sun lifted over the chimneys the lane was full of people with coins in their coats and talk in their mouths. Marjorie threw both arms up at the window, Teddy laughed out loud for the first time that winter, and Hester wrote a single figure in the tin: enough. Now hand me that tray and mind the oven door, it's nearly dawn.
