Cartoon babies and flowers on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of four cartoon children, including a girl with pigtails and bald babies in overalls, with a large bald cartoon head at the centre. Pink and yellow flowers with green leaves fill the gaps and frame the figures, and bold dark outlines define each character. The image is a close photograph of the forearm against an indoor background, with the design filling most of the frame.

'Mind the bramble, Pip, it has opinions about overalls.' You say this to nobody in particular, because the twins have already squeezed through the gap in the hedge and the bald one is following with a stick held like a sword. Beyond the last cottage of Hobb's Green the forest begins without any fuss, just a line of foxgloves and then a great deal of shade.

The pigtailed girl is the one who knows the way. She marches ahead with her hands on her hips, correcting everybody's pronunciation of 'path' and insisting the beech trunks are cathedral pillars because she saw one in a book. The twins hold hands and walk at exactly the same speed, leaving prints the size of thumbs in the soft leaf mould. Every so often one of them stops to pick a pink flower, and the big round-headed one keeps stopping to tell the trees they are doing very well.
By the time the light turns amber you have counted three heads twice and a fourth once, which is the trouble with counting children in a wood. You are about to shout when the girl turns, sighs enormously, and points at a clearing where the flowers have grown so thick they have swallowed a fallen gatepost. Someone has been here before you. A row of tiny overalls hangs on a washing line strung between two oaks, every pocket stuffed with petals.
You never find out who hung them. You bundle the children home in the dusk, and at the gate the girl informs you firmly that the forest is fine but the twins need proper shoes. You agree. You do not look back at the trees, because you have a sneaking feeling they would wave.
