Three cartoon owls on a branch on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three cartoon owls sit side by side on a brown branch with green leaves. Each owl has large round eyes with pale pink and white rings, and the outlines are dark with soft shading on the feathers. The blue, purple and blue owls stand out against the pale skin, and the branch runs along the lower part of the composition.

Mind the step, love, and sit down before I get to the bit with the stationmaster. Three owls came to roost on the signal branch above platform two at Holloway Mill, the winter the lamps went out early. Blue Ned, Purple Mabel and the other blue one, who never gave a name because he was too busy blinking. They had big round eyes, ringed like the cogs on a clock, and they could see the 9.14 coming through the fog before anyone on the platform had their hats on.

Stationmaster Pryce did not care for owls. He said they were untidy and that they left feathers on the timetables. So one evening he climbed the ladder with a broom and a tin of green paint, and he said he would have them down. Mabel looked at him with those great pale rings and said, very politely, that the 9.14 was running eleven minutes late and he had better check his watch before he started on anybody's branch.

He checked. She was right. He sat on the bottom rung and ate his sandwich, and the owls kept watch until the train pulled in with its lamps lit like a row of small moons. Nobody on that platform ever heard a word of complaint from him about owls again.

So if you're waiting for a train tonight, look up. They're still there, the three of them, and they're still counting the minutes for us.
