I have moved the box twice. It is now sitting in a washing-up bowl, which is the closest thing to a plan I have managed this week.

Your eye would have enjoyed the woman with the orange umbrella who bought six rubber ducks and asked me, very seriously, whether they were allowed to be out in the dark. I told her ducks are allowed most places. She looked at me as though I were the one who needed telling something. I have been thinking about that look all afternoon, mostly while standing beside the lamp post and pretending to be a lamp post. Nobody checks a lamp post for a pulse.

The council man came round at four with his clipboard and said the pitch licence was up for renewal and he needed to see my public liability paperwork. I handed over the envelope. He read it twice, looked up at my horns, then at the sky, and wrote something down that I suspect was just the word horns. I am going to frame the form.

Come down on Saturday when it stops. Bring the torch and the good tin of biscuits. I will leave the bowl where it is, and if you see a small round shape floating in the puddle by the bins, it is not a drain cover. It is you, and I will be very cross if you do not wave.
