Three kitten portraits stacked on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Three kitten heads are stacked one above another along the forearm, each shown in a soft, realistic style. The top two are rendered in greys with fine fur strokes and smooth shading, while the bottom kitten has brown, purple and green tones with blue-green eyes. The plain white background and close framing keep the focus on the tattoos.

The two grey ones were hard to tell apart, so my brother named them after the two shipping forecast areas he could never remember, and I let him. The third was brown and striped like a mackerel's back, and when the wheelhouse lamp caught her face, her left eye came up green while the right stayed blue. Nobody else's cat had that. Dad called her Lamp and that was that.
The year the quota was cut, a man from the packing company came down the quay with a clipboard and offered cash for the lot. He wanted the brown one for his daughter. Dad looked at the three of them asleep on a coil of rope, all curled into the same warm knot, and said the boat wasn't a shop.
The man went off up the quay with his clipboard. That evening I found Lamp on the bow, staring past the breakwater at the fog lifting off the water, one green eye and one blue catching the last of the light, as if someone had put her there to read the weather for us.
