You are counting them again under the laundrette lamp, the way you count wet socks on the line, because three is a number that refuses to stay put. The first two came out of the bins behind Cable Street in the same grey week, both with the same worried brows, both already convinced the world was a rumour. You named them Ash and Smoke, which is what grey things get called in this city, and they slept in a cardboard box lined with a folded dry-cleaning bag.

Then came the third, the one that arrived in October rain with its ribs showing and a patch of ginger in its ears. Nobody wanted it. The man at the corner shop said it looked like a paper bag somebody had left out on a wall. You carried it up four flights inside your coat, and somewhere on the stairs it stopped shivering and began to purr like a small engine. That was the start of the trouble, because the purr got into the other two and never got out again.

By February they were arranged on the windowsill in order of arrival, Ash, then Smoke, then the brown one whose green eyes the streetlamp turned to lime. Buses hissed past below the glass at two in the morning. You watched them sleep and thought that loving a small thing usually means ending up with its whole family to feed, and that you had never once been asked.
