Three-line script quote in black and blue
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo reads Live every moment, Laugh every day and Love beyond words in three lines, with Live, Laugh and Love set in large flowing script and the smaller phrases in a neater hand beside them. The letters are outlined in black with blue shading along one side of the strokes. The lines are stacked vertically on smooth, lightly reddened skin, and the lettering is sharp and evenly spaced.

You have been fighting the bindweed in the back bed since breakfast, and every root you pull snaps off at the crown, so eventually you give up and sit on the upturned bucket with your gloves in your lap. Over the fence, the Okafor boy is kicking a ball against the shed door, thunk, then a pause, then thunk again, and you find yourself counting the gaps without meaning to. It is the kind of noise a garden makes when nobody is trying to make it.

Three slate slabs lean against the water butt where the path bends. You cut the words into them the spring the allotment flooded and you had nothing better to do with your hands: Live every moment, Laugh every day, Love beyond words. Ruth thought the whole arrangement was soppy. She said so on the morning she loaded her van for Leeds, then she took the good secateurs and left you the rusty spade with her initials burned into the handle, which was, you suspected, her way of saying the same thing.
This afternoon you finally dig the hole she always wanted, in the sunny corner where the pear whip has been sulking in its pot since March. The soil is heavy and cold and full of old brick. Halfway down your trowel clanks on a tin, and inside it, wrapped in a carrier bag, are twenty-odd seed packets in her looping hand, each labelled with a year and a single word: sweetpea, nasturtium, runner bean, wait.
You read the last one twice and then laugh properly for the first time in weeks, a sound that startles a blackbird off the fence. You plant the pear, stake it, and water it until the ground darkens. Then you press your palm flat against the cool slate by the butt, because slate, unlike most people, keeps exactly what you carve into it.
