Live Laugh Love script and stars on a foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo reads Live Laugh Love in black cursive script, stacked over three lines, with purple outlined stars and small blue and pink sparkle marks scattered around the words. A black tribal-style swirl with small heart shapes sits on the left side of the design. The photo shows the top of a foot with painted coral toenails against a dark leather background, with the design centred on the foot.

Dear Ruth,

The back lamp went out again last night, so I am writing by the range with the door open for the light. Mam says to tell you the coal man has finally been paid and the lad from number nine has got his lines back. Nobody in Hetton Row talks about anything else, which suits me fine, because I have nothing to say about the price of bread.

Walking home from the Co-op on Tuesday I stopped at the top of the tip and counted stars. There were more than I'd thought, sharp and small over the winding house, and I stood there till my fingers went numb. Dad used to say the pit ponies could find their way home by them if the lamps failed. I believed him for years. I still half believe him.

I found the old biscuit tin at the back of the press when I was looking for your christening candle. The lid still has his writing on it in Indian ink, gone brown at the edges: Live, Laugh, Love, with a little star under it that he drew with the point of a nib, because he said a man should never be too grand to decorate a bread bin. I had forgotten he'd done that. I sat on the stairs and cried like a fool, then laughed at myself, which he would have liked.

So I am sending you the tin. Don't argue. Keep your sugar in it and look at the star when you open it. Write back soon and tell me what the sea is doing at Roker.

Love, Nell
